The Firm of Girdlestone
Behind a narrow doorway near Fenchurch Street Station, Girdlestone and Co. conducts its African trade with an imposing reputation for honesty. John Girdlestone speaks the language of duty and religion; his son Ezra prefers to get straight to the money. When a sailor’s widow asks about her husband’s pay, Girdlestone consults his ledger and explains that she owes the firm money. Conan Doyle gives us reason to distrust these merchants before letting us into their business affairs.
Into their keeping comes Kate Harston, a young heiress whose father believes utterly in his old friend Girdlestone. She needs affection and freedom in a household where both are scarce. Around her, courtship and ordinary hopes for the future become entangled with the calculations of men who regard other people as assets. This is a Victorian crime novel in which the danger grows out of familiar arrangements: a trusted guardian, a respectable firm, a promise made by someone who sounds quite certain of his own goodness.
Doyle makes room for lively company beyond the counting-house. Major Tobias Clutterbuck offers generous invitations while carefully withholding his address, and the timid clerk Thomas Gilray brings a kindness his employers conspicuously lack. Such encounters give the story warmth and humour alongside its gathering suspense. Money passes through conversations about friendship, charity and marriage, changing what each speaker means. Listening to the men who have power over Kate, you begin to wonder what even a courteous welcome might cost her.
