The Mystery of Cloomber
On a lonely stretch of the Scottish coast, a retired general takes possession of Cloomber Hall and begins making it difficult for anyone to approach. A high fence goes up, provisions arrive in astonishing quantities, and a notice at the gate tells neighbours that their company is unwanted. For John Fothergill West, a young law student living nearby, these are irresistible reasons to wonder what is happening inside.
General Heatherstone has a distinguished military record, yet an unexpected greeting can leave him shaking. His son and daughter long for the ordinary friendships that their father’s precautions deny them. As John becomes attached to the family, his curiosity acquires a more anxious purpose: understanding the general might help the people who must live with his fear. Conan Doyle brings this unease into familiar social encounters, where an awkward introduction or an invitation refused can suggest something far more troubling than bad manners.
This short novel combines a country-house mystery with supernatural suspense. John presents his account with the earnestness of someone preparing evidence, drawing on other witnesses as well as his own observations. His confidence in sensible explanations makes a useful companion to the bleak moors and the house with its guarded gates. There is humour, too, in his scholarly father’s absent-mindedness and the local appetite for gossip. Those ordinary voices make Cloomber feel close enough to visit, while the general’s elaborate defences leave a question hanging over every friendly gesture: what could make a brave soldier so afraid?
